Marshall County Family Wins $1,000 for College with Summer Reading
Marshall County Public Library awarded $500 for future reading programs.
CALVERT CITY, Ky.— A Marshall County family is getting a head start on saving for college after participating in the Fizz Boom Save! summer reading program through the Marshall County Public Library. Summer reading participant Allee Noles of Benton, Ky., was randomly selected to receive a $1,000 Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT) account for her family. The Marshall County Public Library will also receive $500 for future reading programs. KESPT is Kentucky’s official Section 529 College Savings Plan.
KESPT and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) teamed up to offer Fizz Boom Save! as part of the 2014 Summer Reading Program, emphasizing the importance of reading through the summer and saving early for college. Thousands of children participated in the Summer Reading Program at libraries across the state, and more than 7,100 families entered Fizz Boom Save! for a chance to win a KESPT college savings plan account.
“We appreciate the successful partnership with KESPT. It was a good opportunity to encourage children to read while emphasizing saving for college with Kentucky’s 529 plan,” said Tammy Blackwell, young adult services, Marshall County Public Library. “We’re also excited to win $500 to help us enhance future reading programs.”
Parents, grandparents and guardians were invited to enter Fizz Boom Save! on behalf of a Kentucky child age 18 or younger. The students were randomly selected to win.
“Our goal is to encourage families to start saving for college and increase awareness of Kentucky’s 529 college savings program,” said David Lawhorn, KESPT administrator. “The libraries are a terrific partner in helping us reach families across the Commonwealth.”
Many Kentucky libraries participate each year in the nationwide Collaborative Summer Library Program to encourage children to continue reading through the summer. More than 100,000 children across the state participate every year.
