Colonel Sanders Visits The Library
BENTON, KY – Harland Sanders, most commonly referred to as Colonel Sanders, is possibly the most well-known Kentuckian in the world. With KFC restaurants scattered across the globe and a new advertising campaign featuring his likeness, Colonel Sanders is easily recognizable to people both old and young.
On Monday, June 22, L. Henry Dowell, a performer with the Kentucky Chautauqua division of the Kentucky Humanities Council, brought the story of Colonel Sanders to life at the Marshall County Public Library. The library provided a spread of Southern food while Dowell assumed the persona of Colonel Sanders and shared the story of his life.
Born in 1890, Sanders worked many different jobs before starting his fried chicken restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, in 1930. By 1963 there were more than 600 outlets selling his chicken.
“We are very happy to be able to host a program like this,” says Ginger Russell, Adult Services Librarian. “The performers with the Kentucky Chautauqua allow us to get a unique glimpse into Kentucky’s history. It’s a wonderful way to learn more about our state’s past and heritage.”
